Set on the Virginia tobacco fields in 1863, Star Crest is a story about a slave, Tom, with a modern-day sci-fi twist interwoven. After trying to escape the plantation, Tom is captured and returned to his slave master where he must face his punishment. Upon his release, he is met with a Japanese man visiting the plantation. It is during this time that Union soldiers invade the plantation, gaining Tom, and other slaves, the upper hand. While the plantation is under attack, the visitor witnesses an act of mercy granted by Tom. In response, he rewards Tom’s heroism by transporting him back to Japan where he has something in store greater than the slave’s wildest imagination. A gift bestowed upon Tom insinuates that the Japanese may know more about his identity than he, himself. It is at this point, during his transformation into Star Crest – his true self, that Tom’s journey really begins.
